Dr. Casey Thomas joined The Surgicalist Group in 2019 as Chief Medical Officer, following an esteemed career in trauma surgery and academic medicine. Tasked with ensuring each surgicalist upholds the mission, vision, and values of The Surgicalist Group, Dr. Thomas is highly involved during the surgicalist onboarding process. Working one-on-one with each surgicalist, topics such as case capture through documentation improvement plans, partnering with hospital teams (especially in the ED and OR) and community surgeons, and professionalism are covered. With each encounter, he stresses the importance of advancing the surgical standard of care through engaged surgicalist champions who leveraging innovation, practicing evidence-based care, making data-driven decisions, and are expertly delivering value to our patients and hospital partners.
Additionally, Dr. Thomas’ passion for advancing the adoption of the surgicalist model on a broad scale is the driving force behind detailed research projects involving The Surgicalist Group. Through several case studies, Dr. Thomas has found that surgicalists are highly effective when it comes to improvements in case mix index, length of stay, ED-to-OR throughput, OR optimization, cost savings, and revenue generation, coining the term as The Surgicalist Group’s “smarter effect“.
Dr. Thomas has experienced several “ah-ha” moments throughout his career, leading him to his position today, advocating that every patient receives the right care, at the right time through the innovative surgicalist model. He earned his B.S. from Western Michigan University in 1993 and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. He currently is a Senior Surgical Partner at Salt Lake Surgical Services. Dr. Thomas completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Mount Clemens General Hospital. He completed his fellowship in Surgical Critical Care/Trauma at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Thomas has written numerous publications and regularly presents at national and international conferences.He has served on many local and national medical committees.
